Autumn Rocket Camellia delivers vertical elegance where space is tight. It grows upright and columnar, reaching about 8 to 10 feet tall while staying only 3 to 4 feet wide. Pink buds open in fall to double white flowers with creamy yellow centers, standing out against glossy dark green evergreen foliage. Our landscape designers use Camellia sasanqua 'Autumn Rocket' when a standard camellia would spread too far, especially at a corner, beside a gate, or along a slim side-yard border. This fall-blooming sasanqua has a stronger vertical habit than most camellias, so it gives height without taking over planting space. The white flowers appear in autumn, making the shrub useful after summer perennials have faded and before winter plantings take over. Its evergreen foliage keeps a clean screen in place year-round, and the flowers may draw late-season pollinators. Plant Autumn Rocket Camellia as a tall narrow hedge, espalier, vertical accent, or flowering privacy screen in protected sites.Autumn Rocket Camellia CareProvide partial sun to bright, dappled light with 35 hours of gentle morning sun and afternoon shade. It prefers organically rich, moist but well-drained soil; amended clay, loam, silt, or improved sandy soil can all work when drainage is strong. Keep soil acidic to mildly acidic, around 5.0 to 6.5 pH.Water deeply during the first growing season, then reduce frequency once the root system is established. Because this variety blooms in fall, watch soil moisture during late summer when buds are sizing up, since dry swings can reduce flower quality. Feed after flowering with an acid-forming fertilizer, or fertilize in spring for fall bloom support, but avoid heavy feeding late in the season. Inspect leaf undersides for tea scale in late winter and treat with horticultural oil if needed.Prune right after flowering to refine the columnar outline or shorten any side shoots that widen the plant. For a hedge, trim lightly rather than cutting hard into older interior wood. Keep mulch over the root zone to cool the soil and conserve moisture, leaving several inches open around the trunk. Autumn Rocket Camellia SpacingSpace Autumn Rocket Camellia 3 feet apart for a tall, narrow hedge, or 6 feet or more apart when using it as a single vertical accent. Choose a container at least 1822 inches in diameter with drainage holes, and fill with an acidic, bark-based potting mix.Great companion plants include false cypress, pieris shrubs, ajuga, and liriope for layered evergreen texture in part shade. For containers, lobelia or bacopa can trail around the base because regular watering and filtered light match the camellias needs.
