description
Blue Point Juniper gives the landscape a tall evergreen shape with dense blue-green foliage from base to tip. Juniperus chinensis 'Blue Point' naturally forms a broad pyramid, reaching about 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide at maturity. Its structured habit works beautifully as a lawn specimen, entry accent, privacy screen, or windbreak. Our landscape designer often uses it where a planting needs height in all seasons, such as near driveways or broad foundation beds. This Chinese juniper selection holds its shape with very little trimming, which makes it useful in both formal and casual landscapes. The evergreen foliage is dense enough for screening, and mature plants may produce small powder-blue berry-like cones that add seasonal detail. Blue Point Juniper tolerates heat, drought once established, coastal exposure, urban pollution, deer, and rabbits. It can be clipped for topiary, lined up as a hedge, or planted singly where its pyramidal outline can become a permanent garden anchor. Blue Point Juniper Care Plant Blue Point Juniper in full sun for the densest branching and best blue-green color. It adapts to sandy, loamy, clay, acidic, neutral, or alkaline soil when drainage is good. Avoid wet sites or low areas where roots remain saturated after storms. Water deeply during the first growing season whenever the top 2 inches of soil dry. Established plants become drought tolerant and usually need supplemental water only during extended dry heat. Fertilize once in early spring with a slow-release evergreen fertilizer before new growth begins. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from the trunk and lower branches. Prune Blue Point Juniper lightly to shape, staying within green growth. For topiary or a more formal outline, trim in early summer after the spring flush begins to firm. Remove dead, damaged, or crowded interior branches as needed to improve airflow, and avoid cutting into bare old wood. Blue Point Juniper Spacing Space Blue Point Juniper at least 8 feet apart for individual specimens or broad pyramidal screens. For a denser privacy planting, use 5 to 6 feet apart and allow the plants to grow together gradually. In containers, choose a heavy pot at least 24 inches wide with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix, and water more often during summer heat. in sunny beds with good drainage, pair Blue Point Juniper with potentilla, spirea, allium, and little bluestem; the planting will have moderate to low water needs once established. Salvia and blanket flowers can add seasonal color at the base and are comfortable in the same bright, dry-leaning conditions. In large containers, use calibrachoa, alyssum, or petunias around the edge for annual color that can share full sun and regular watering.
