Chick Charms® Candied Apple Hens and Chicks Care Sempervivums need full sun to thrive and look their best. These drought-tolerant succulents store water in their fleshy leaves and only need to be watered when completely dry. They are not picky about soil quality and do best in average or low-quality soil. Highly fertile soil may cause leggy growth. The hens send out offshoots known as chicks. Sempervivum hens will fade shortly after the chicks emerge. Remove the parent plant after it starts to decline to make space for the chicks to mature. Move potted plants to a protected area for the winter, but no other special winter care is needed. Chick Charms® Candied Apple Hens and Chicks Spacing The Sempervivum 'Candied Apple' stands 2 inches tall and 4 to 6 inches wide. Space plants 6 inches apart when filling a container or planting in a bed.
