description

Compact Japanese Holly has a dense, rounded evergreen form with tiny glossy leaves that keep their rich green color throughout the year. Ilex crenata Compacta typically matures near 5 to 6 feet tall and about 6 feet wide, making an outstanding informal or formal low hedge. Its fine foliage accepts clipped geometry exceptionally well and also develops into an attractive broad mound when allowed to grow naturally. We have found the small leaves create remarkably precise lines on formal hedges and rounded topiary.Native to temperate East Asia, Japanese holly is a broadleaf evergreen valued for dense branching, urban tolerance, and a long lifespan under suitable conditions. These shrubs are also listed as being deer resistant according to the University of Arkansas agriculture department. Small greenish-white flowers appear in spring and mature into black fruit in the fall, attracting birds and other wildlife. This is a female cultivar that requires a compatible male plant nearby to produce berries. Use it as a clipped boundary beside a walkway, a repeating foundation shrub below windows, or a rounded anchor at the corners of structured beds. Compact Japanese Holly CarePlant Compact Japanese Holly in full sun to partial shade, with some afternoon protection beneficial in hot southern climates. Choose moist, well-drained loam, clay, or sandy soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the root zone slightly acidic, since alkaline ground commonly causes yellow foliage associated with chlorosis.Water deeply after planting and maintain even moisture through the first growing season, checking the soil when the upper inch begins to dry. Established shrubs tolerate brief dry intervals, though prolonged heat or drought calls for a slow, thorough soaking. Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving broadleaf evergreens in early spring according to label rates. Spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone to moderate moisture and winter temperature changes; leave a small open ring around the stems.Prune in late winter after the coldest weather has passed, or lightly shear after the spring flush matures when maintaining a hedge or topiary. For a natural rounded form, thin selected branches back to interior laterals rather than repeatedly clipping only the exterior growth. Container-grown shrubs need root protection during severe freezes, and their soil should be checked during mild winter periods when it remains unfrozen.Compact Japanese Holly SpacingFor a continuous hedge, space Compact Japanese Holly 4 to 5 feet apart on center. Allow about 6 feet between plants when each shrub will retain a separate rounded outline. Use a weather-resistant container at least 24 inches wide for a young 3-gallon plant, moving it into a larger pot as roots fill the growing mix. Containers need drainage holes, an acidic bark-based medium, and more frequent moisture checks than shrubs planted in the ground.Compact Japanese Holly Companion PlantingIn partial shade, pair Compact Japanese Holly with pieris shrubs, ferns, and Japanese forest grass, which appreciate humus-rich soil, dependable moisture, and an acidic root zone. Hydrangeas and sedge are well suited to sunnier mixed borders with similar watering conditions. In a large mixed container, sedge and seasonal pansies have compatible soil preferences and add lower foliage and cool-season flowers.
