Fertile, moist and well draining soil is ideal, but it can tolerate more compact or poor soil. Adding organic mulch and or compost annually can help to retain moisture and give it just enough of a nutrient boost. It can handle periods of drought, but typically it is happiest when soil that is well draining and evenly moist. Trimming is sparsely needed. Trim back every other season, in early spring to shape and invigorate growth. Since Potentilla blooms on both new and old wood, only cut back older plants up to â of its size.
