Little Gem Magnolia brings the evergreen foliage and fragrant white flowers of a Southern magnolia to a substantially smaller-growing tree. This cultivar develops a dense, upright form with glossy green leaves and bronze-brown undersides, giving it year-round presence without the eventual scale of a standard Southern magnolia. Fragrant white to creamy-white flowers appear from late spring through summer, with flowering timing varying by climate. Little Gem grows slowly and matures to approximately 15–20 feet tall by 8–10 feet wide. Its smaller mature size makes it easier to incorporate as an evergreen specimen or flowering focal point where a much larger Southern magnolia would eventually overwhelm the available space. Landscape Uses Evergreen Specimen Tree Little Gem Magnolia works especially well as a specimen tree where its dense evergreen foliage, upright form and seasonal flowers can serve as a focal point. Plan for its mature 15–20-foot height and 8–10-foot canopy width when choosing a location near buildings, walkways and overhead structures. Although Little Gem is often described as a dwarf Southern magnolia, “dwarf” is relative to the much larger species. It still develops into a substantial landscape tree. Mixed Landscape Beds Little Gem can also anchor a mixed shrub or ornamental-grass planting. Lower branches may be removed gradually as the tree develops if you prefer a raised-canopy specimen form. This can create more visual and physical space beneath the canopy for compatible shrubs and grasses. Companion plants do not need to remain outside the tree's entire mature canopy width. Instead, choose and place them according to their own mature size along with the light, root competition and soil moisture available beneath and around the Magnolia. Outdoor Containers Little Gem Magnolia can be grown in a large outdoor container, although its eventual tree size and root requirements make container culture an ongoing management commitment rather than a permanent small-pot solution. Use a container with dependable drainage. Monitor moisture and nutrition regularly and be prepared to repot or otherwise manage the root system as the tree outgrows its available space.
