Orchid Frost Lamium (Lamium maculatum Orchid Frost) is a fast-spreading perennial groundcover that brightens shady areas with striking silver foliage and months of colorful blooms. The low-growing plants quickly form a dense carpet of heart-shaped leaves edged in deep green, creating contrast and texture where many plants struggle. From late spring into early summer, clusters of vivid purple flowers rise above the foliage, bringing reliable color to woodland gardens, borders, and containers. This cultivar was discovered and patented in 1998 by plantsman Mike Bovio (Plant Patent #11,122). Orchid Frost grows 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads 15 to 18 inches wide. The semi-evergreen foliage remains attractive most of the year and stays evergreen in mild winter climates. Orchid Frost spreads as stems root where they touch the soil, making it an excellent long-blooming groundcover beneath trees and shrubs. It performs well in woodland plantings, hanging baskets, and mixed containers. Deer and rabbits tend to avoid it, while butterflies and pollinators are attracted to the blooms. Orchid Frost Lamium Care Orchid Frost Lamium should be grown in partial sun to dappled shade, and can even bloom in full shade. The soil for your lamium should be well-drained. It requires light water, as over-watering will cause root rot. Your lamium will require some grooming in the late fall or winter to remove old or unsightly growth. Orchid Frost will self seed and it is a great selection in colder climates. Orchid Frost Lamium Spacing Orchid Frost Lamium is an excellent choice for ground cover in any landscape, including those with slopes or ledges. You can use it along borders or in containers and planters of all types. They are particularly lovely in a hanging basket, and pair well with crocus, freesia, and other spring bulbs. They are also stunning when interspersed with hostas and ferns. You should plant your Orchid Frost Lamium 16 inches apart.
