Like other rhododendrons, this pink beauty bursts forth with blooms each spring, but then, after a brief rest, it blooms again in mid-summer and keeps going until cold frost hits in fall. Each of the big, saturated pink blooms last longer than those of many shrubs, too. With its long blooming season, mature size of about 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide, and large blooms, this azalea can take a featured role in almost any area of the garden. It is hardy to zone 6B, so be sure to give it protection in cooler zones. Choose acidic soil that drains well. If the soil tends to retain water, place your azalea so the root ball is slightly above ground level. Applying a thick layer of organic mulch can help maintain the temperature of the soil to protect the plant from high heat or cold nights. Water the azalea regularly, but not if the soil is saturated. If you like, fertilize your azalea in early spring, just as you see new growth emerging on the shrub.
