Rabbits Foot Fern is a plant that many fern addicts go mad for. The fuzzy rhizomes that grow on the top of the soil are the roots. They are soft and fuzzy and look like bunny feet. When the plant gets bigger, they look more like a hare's foot (another common name). This fern is great for new gardeners or those more experienced who just dont remember to repot plants often. The more potbound this plant becomes, the more fuzzy roots will develop at the top and around the pot.Best Locations For Growing Rabbits Foot FernAlso known as Davallia fejeensis, this fern prefers moderate humidity and average room temperatures. Kitchens and bathrooms are great spots to grow this fern, in addition to a shady patio or deck during the summer. Rabbit's Foot Fern is non-toxic and can be used in a childs room to filter the air.Rabbits Foot Fern Sunlight RequirementsBright to medium indirect light levels will keep the fronds of this fern deep green and the rhizomes a silvery-brown shade. Too much light for any fern will bleach and burn the delicate fronds. A north-facing windowsill is ideal, but opposite an east- or west-facing window is also a great location in the house. Always give Rabbits Foot Fern plenty of shade when growing it outdoors for the summer. Rabbits Foot Fern CareThe potting soil for Rabbits Foot needs to be well-draining and rich. Add fine Orchid bark and worm castings to an all-purpose mix. When repotting, be careful not to break the surface rhizomes and do not bury them in the new pot with soil. Shallow pots and hanging baskets show off the roots well and are much better tolerated by the plants. Their roots are fairly shallow and tend to rot in deep pots with damp soil. Watering Rabbits Foot FernThe soil needs to be lightly moist all of the time in the summer. Water 2-3 times a week; empty saucers of standing water after 15 minutes. Water in the winter when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Keep the humidity high around these plants using portable humidifiers, or set the pot on a tray filled with 2 inches of pebbles and water halfway up the rocks.Feeding Rabbits Foot FernApply a diluted liquid fertilizer once every three weeks in the summer. A balanced formulation for general houseplants is acceptable. Do not water during the fall or winter.
